A very wise mother I know taught me the importance of reading to my children, it was however the very brilliant sister in law of mine who taught our family to check them out from the library. So, every week we go to the Library on Monday night and check out new books. I love funny children's books, and I love children's books that teach valuable lessons. One of my recent favorites is "Hurty Feelings" by Helen Lester. It is about a hippopotamus that gets insulted and takes all compliments as insults, twists them around, and in the end, no one will talk to her. She has no friends. She does however learn her lesson in a not so comfortable way. When I had originally rented this book, I expected it to teach my children how NOT to hurt other peoples' feelings...and in the end was pleasantly surprised. It taught both parts of feelings. Owning them, and respecting them. And not only did it teach my children, it reminded me of some great values my mother and father both tried to instill in me.
It's a great read!
